Bayou Classic, Homecoming and Tiger Fest are three of the many events Grambling State University is known for. The anticipation of school spirit from current students, graduate students and alumni attract people from miles away. Upon the arrival, you can't help but to think of the World Famed Tiger Marching Band, Greeks and the excitement Grambling students love to offer. The many elements of what make up a successful HBCU Homecoming are obtained by the Tigers of Grambling State University.
GSU'S Homecoming 2010 is vastly approaching. Instead of seeking the typical he said-she said, students gear their attention their collegiate newspaper The Gramblinite to get the where-abouts of Homecoming. As I opened the pages of information that it is known to offer, I specifically sought out the Homecoming 2010 schedule. Excited to see the annual gospel explosion along with a campus wide picnic on Sunday, I assured myself that this would open up an awesome week. Events throughout Monday and Tuesday such as Build-A-Tiger, Greek Stroll, Power Puff and a Late Night Special are what most students expected to see. It seems to be the comedy show, concert and step show that students demand during their Homecoming and what some think makes up the bulk of the week.
Still grateful that entertainers such as Charlie Murphy, Young Jeezy and Terrence J will be among us during the week of activies, I as well as my peers could not help but to complain about the expense of tickets to what we think are important events. We are extremely happy to see actor, writer and comedian Charlie Murphy this year but the show will be held at our school, at our Homecoming, in our buildings. To say the least, this isn't a Ruston Civic Center Event, why then are students paying $10 to enter the comedy show. If this price shocks you, our own Homecoming concert cost $15, talent show $5 and to witness greeks that we see everyday at a step show is $10 as well. As a student thats already $40, I feel awfully bad for those who don't have tiger i.d's as their price range is doubled.
Many may have heard a thousand times "Grambling has no money," is this the reason of such a costly Homecoming this year? If so do you thing students should decrease the cost by paying a homecoming fee with tuition or should Grambling get a grip and stop trying to take money from every venue that offers it. What's your opinion on the extreme prices of Homecoming?
